Homeopathy is a system of medicine that treats the individual with the disease rather than one or other specific symptoms. A homeopath sees symptoms as an expression of an imbalance of the whole organism and understands that by righting this imbalance with a correctly chosen medicine the symptoms will be removed and a sense of health and well being restored.
The First Consultation
The first consultation will generally take between 60 and 90 minutes. We will talk about your presenting complaint (the reason you have come for homeopathy) in detail, and then I will want to know about such areas as sleep, diet and personal and family medical history. I will also be interested in hearing about any areas of your life that you may be experiencing as stressful or difficult. Please let me know about any medication you are taking.
All information is kept strictly confidential.
The Prescription
Once this information has been taken at the first consultation I will prescribe a homeopathic medicine. This is not always on the spot, as I may need to spend some time analysing your case in order to come to the most accurate prescription. In this case the medicine will be sent to you within a few days of the consultation.
Homeopathic medicines are usually taken in the form of pills or tablets. Occasionally you may be given a liquid remedy. You will be given clear instructions as to how to take the remedy. Sometimes remedies are taken several times a day, for example during acute complaints (cough, fever, diarrhoea etc), at others it may be once daily, once weekly or even less frequently.
In some instances I may recommend nutritional and lifestyle changes. We may also discuss other treatment options, for example visiting your doctor for tests. I encourage you to maintain your relationship with your GP and other healthcare professionals. Homeopathy can be used alongside conventional medicines and will not interfere with their action. Being able to make an informed choice about your treatment options is an important aspect of the journey towards health.
The Follow Up Consultation
A follow up consultation is generally made between 4- 6 weeks after the initial appointment. However, it may be sooner depending on the reason you came for homeopathy. Follow ups last for 30 – 45 minutes. The purpose of a follow up is to assess how you have responded to the homeopathic remedy and to prescribe further as needed. It will also be an opportunity to explore your health issues in greater depth.
Length of Treatment
The length of your treatment will depend on the nature of your condition, how long you have had it and also in some cases the amount of medication you have previously used. I will be able to give you an idea of how long you may require homeopathic treatment once I have assessed your case.
Homeopathic medicines do not create dependency. The aim of homeopathic treatment is to increase your general level of health and strengthen your immune system. Once this has been achieved and your symptoms have improved it will usually not be necessary to continue taking homeopathic medicines.
Treatment is not meant to promise or imply cure. It is rather used to describe the analysis of your case and decision regarding the most appropriate remedy over a period of time.
